Next 7 to 11 November S3E will be in Greece for its first Open Call Roadshow

The consortium of S3E – The Engine for South European Deep Tech is pleased to announce the celebration of the First Roadshow in Greece for the official launch of its First Open Call. As part of the development of an engine of growth that will improve the connectedness and efficiency of the entrepreneurship ecosystems in Southern European countries, the EU funded project South3E will accelerate Deep Tech projects and solutions coming from research teams, start-ups and SMEs that can impact social development and economic growth for a more sustainable future.

Through the Open Call #1, S3E will select and support the development of disruptive solutions built around unique, protected or hard-to-reproduce breakthroughs, and embodies products, processes or services capable of fulfilling currently unmet (or ill-met) market needs. This new engine will unlock the untapped innovation potential of Southern European Deep Tech, targeting scientific and technical excellence in the fields of agricultural, life and physical sciences, engineering and technology.

The S3E Open call is open from 7 November 2022 (12pm CEST) to 10 February 2023 (17h CEST).

Together with the launch of the First Open Call, the S3E project is organising its first Roadshow in Greece. During 7-11 November, project partners will be meeting different members of the Greek Research and Innovation ecosystem to present the project and the S3E programs and services that are available through the open call process.

On November 8th, at 4 pm CEST, Institute for Sustainable Development at EPLO will host the Official Event announcing the launch of the First Open Call at the National Hellenic Research Foundation (NHRF), one of the largest research centers in Greece, counting with renowned speakers: S3E Open Call Event - Speakers.

The rationale behind South3E: the Engine for South European Deep Tech

S3E – The Engine for South European Deep Tech is a European project with the ambition to develop an engine of growth to contribute improving the connectedness and efficiency of the entrepreneurship ecosystems in Southern European countries.

S3E focuses on the acceleration of deep tech projects, start-ups, and SMEs that, by providing solutions towards a more sustainable society and economy, can impact social development and economic growth in these countries and contribute to the timely achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), in line with the EU Green Deal, the EU Digital Agenda and the Recovery Plan for Europe.

Why Southern Europe?

All Southern European countries are Moderate and Emerging Innovators, according to the European Innovation Scoreboard and to close the innovation gap, to the countries that are Strong Innovators, they need to improve on several dimensions, namely the spill over to society of the knowledge produced by research activities. Because deep tech start-ups are fostered by research that, in most cases, is developed within the scientific ecosystem (e.g., universities, tech transfer offices), the acceleration of deep tech projects, start-ups and SMEs facilitates this knowledge spill over and, thus, it is a significant contribution to change the socio-economic development paradigm in countries with less developed innovation ecosystems.

A recent study, carried out under the umbrella of the European Startups project, supported by the European Commission and the European Parliament, clearly shows a divide between Innovation Leaders and Strong Innovators and Moderate and Emerging Innovator both in the origin of the deep tech start-ups as well as in the funding of these start-ups. It is precisely this divide that the S3E project aims to address, by providing services to improve the quality and the outreach of business acceleration services in the targeted developing innovation ecosystems and by uncovering high-potential deep tech projects, start-ups and SMEs and connect them to the more advanced innovation ecosystems.

Why Deep Tech?

At S3E, we define Deep Tech as the umbrella term for all those technologies grounded on either scientific discovery or meaningful engineering innovation. Deep Tech nurtures the development of disruptive solutions built around unique, protected or hard-to-reproduce technological or scientific advances and drives the creation of products, processes or services that fulfill unmet (or ill-met) market needs.

On July 2022, Europe adopted the New European Innovation Agenda with the objective to position Europe at the forefront of the new wave of deep tech innovation, supporting start-ups to develop new technologies to address the most pressing societal challenges and to bring them on the market. S3E, in line with the above, echoes this ambition and it is committed to be the place where the best talent work hand in hand with the best companies and where deep tech innovation thrives and creates breakthrough innovative solutions across the EU.

Several aspects contribute to set South3E apart.

In the first place, the fact that S3E is focused on a group of countries (Southern Europe) that are lagging in terms of innovation-led social and economic growth and that, because of their geographic location, share some common socio-economic traits that may contribute to facilitate the deployment of this growth engine.

In the second place, because S3E is focused on deep tech for sustainable development which may lead to start-ups that can have more impact on growth than the business model innovation-based start-ups, that usually are catered for in this type of projects.

Last, but not the least, the project nurtures the root that enables the offspring of deep tech start-ups, which it is a very important endeavour that, sometimes, it is taken for granted in countries with more advanced innovation ecosystems and, thus, perfectly functioning support to technology commercialization, but extremely needed in countries with developing innovation ecosystems.

· · ·

All in all, South3E alignment with EU priorities and strategies strengths our commitment to improve the market connectedness & efficiency of research teams, startups & SMEs working on Deep Tech through the acceleration of Deep Tech projects coming from research teams, and deep tech solutions coming from start-ups and SMEs that can impact social development and economic growth for a more sustainable future.

South3E meets its sister projects in a kick-off meeting organised by the European Commission

South3E is a project selected and granted by the European Commission as part of the Expanding Acceleration Ecosystems mission.

The Engine for South European Deep Tech (S3E) is a new European project led by HiSeedTech, the Institute for Sustainable Development of the European Public Law Organization, International Development Ireland and AUSTRALO that has been selected under the HORIZON-EIE-2021-SCALEUP-01-01 call for proposals.

The SCALEUP destination aims at elevating the scalability potential of European business and strengthening and expanding cooperation between innovation players to better support the next generation of innovative companies whose solutions will lead the shift towards a more competitive EU and a more sustainable, inclusive, and resilient world.

Last September, 20th, S3E consortium members participated in a remote kick-off meeting organised by the European Innovation Council and SMEs Executive Agency (EISMEA) addressed at all 5 funded projects in the very same topic.

From S3E, our colleague Claudia Barbosa from HiSeedTech shared the main insights of our project, the objectives and actions we are going to develop during the following 30 months to disrupt the Southern innovation ecosystem and support the uptake of Deep Tech from research teams, startups and scaleups.

The Engine for South European Deep Tech kickstarts!

A new initiative to disrupt the South European innovation ecosystem

Acuerdo Horizon Europe | aumenta el presupuesto

In July 2022, the consortium of S3E – Southern European Entrepreneurship Engine was pleased to announce, during the “HiTech Closing Session” in Lisbon, the launch of an ambitious joint initiative selected and granted by the European Commission as part of the European Innovation Ecosystems - Horizon Europe Programme.

Watch the video presentation

During its 30-month run, 4 partners from Portugal, Greece, Ireland and Spain will join forces to make S3E a reality and develop an engine of growth that will improve the connectedness and efficiency of the entrepreneurship ecosystems in Southern European countries. The focus is on the acceleration of start-ups and SMEs working on Deep Tech solutions that can provide long-term sustainability through social development and economic growth in these countries.

S3E is here to shatter the North-South divide and shift the state of play: this new engine will unlock the untapped innovation potential of Southern European Deep Tech, targeting scientific and technical excellence in the fields of agricultural, life and physical sciences, engineering and technology.

The program is built around 3 tracks of bespoke services tailored to start-ups’ varying levels of maturity (i.e. early, growth, and scaling stages). Participants in the program will be selected through Open Calls: S3E will support 150+ Deep Tech ventures throughout its complete run, so stay tuned for the launch of the very first Open Call, on October 31st!
