Research teams participating in S3E START test their business skills during the Value Proposition Pitch

On May 30, from 15:00 CET to 18:30 CET, the research teams participating in the S3E START programme had to present their deep tech projects value proposition in front of a panel composed of the HiSeedTech team - Cláudia Barbosa, Cristina Simões, Nuno Falcão e Cunha and Pedro Vilarinho. The event took place online with an audience of 50 people and was open to participating teams and the technology transfer officers, mentors, and S3E partners (AUSTRALO, EPLO, and IDI).

The session was held midway through the programme implementation and was intended to: (i) serve as a proxy for the Open Day that will take place on July 20; (ii) provide feedback to the teams and test the robustness of the work done to date; (iii) improve their business skills and familiarise them with the types of questions that might arise during real presentations to investors or other stakeholders.

Each research team had 5 minutes to present their value proposition, which included: defining the problem they are solving and the need behind it, defining the technology, the solution they have and identifying the market, the competition and the team behind it.

The pitches were made in the following order:

The teams are doing great progress and they still have the following seven weeks to focus on improving their value proposition and presentation to have the business model ready for the S3E START Open Day!

S3E at the Danube Lighthouse Conference of the EU Ocean Mission!

Last week, our team members Christina Deligianni and Spyros Kouvelis from the Institute for Sustainable Development at EPLO travelled to Bucharest, Romania, to attend the Danube Lighthouse Conference of the EU Ocean Mission.

The Danube lighthouse, which is part of the EU Mission ''Restore our Ocean and Waters by 2030'' 🌊

With a 2030 target, this EU Mission aims to protect and restore the health of our ocean and waters through research and innovation, citizen engagement and blue investments. The Mission’s new approach will address the ocean and waters as one and play a key role in achieving climate neutrality and restoring nature.

Cross-cutting enabling actions will support this objective, in particular broad public mobilisation and engagement and a digital ocean and water knowledge system, known as Digital Twin OceanEN.

The Mission supports regional engagement and cooperation through area-based “lighthouses” in major sea/river basins: Atlantic-Arctic, Mediterranean Sea, Baltic-North Sea, and Danube-Black Sea. Mission lighthouses are sites to pilot, demonstrate, develop and deploy the Mission activities across EU seas and river basins

During the short trip, Christina and Spyros had the chance to visit the Polytechnic School of Bucharest and participate at the launch of the EcoDalli Project. We are grateful for having had excellent meetings with ICLEI, Danube and Black Sea Stakeholders, Romanian National Institute of Marine Geology, Uni of Zagreb, amongst others, and spread the word about the South European Deep Tech Revolution 🚀 🔥

S3E at the Empowering Female Entrepreneurship Summit 2023

"Empowering Female Entrepreneurship" is a two-day summit that brings together inspiring speakers from all Europe, female entrepreneurs, EU officials, investors and key stakeholders in business.

No alternative text description for this image

The summit was held on the 8-9 of March in Brussels, coinciding with International Women’s Day. Co-organised by the European Female Founders with the support of the European Commission, who initiated the network, the event brought together more than 60 participants. On behalf of the S3E team, our Community Manager, Carmen Serna, attended the event and had the opportunity to meet inspiring female founders.

Two days of inspiration

The speech of Commissioner Mariya Gabriel and the EU Gender Equality Champions Awards opened the summit. Gabriel handed the prizes to the winners of this pioneering initiative that celebrates the outstanding results achieved in implementing gender equality plans by academic and research organisations.

During the first day, participants listened to panels and exchanged knowledge and experiences on critical topics such as how to foster female entrepreneurship, build strong ecosystems and diverse communities and tackle the gender gap regarding access to funding.

Some takeaways from the session remind us that entrepreneurship is crucial to Europe’s economic growth. Yet women entrepreneurs continue to face different gendered challenges, from lack of funding to expectations that they will perform unpaid care duties at home. In this sense, by promoting women’s entrepreneurship, European societies could accelerate economic growth and women’s participation in the marketplace.

In the second day, participants witnessed powerful testimonies about the entrepreneurship journey. With a mix of Keynote Speeches and interactive and stimulating workshops, they learned practical information about where and how to get funding, mental resilience for entrepreneurs and diversity and inclusion.

The "Empowering Female Entrepreneurship" summit has created a rich forum for discussion, experience sharing, and alignment to understand better why female entrepreneurship in Europe is still lagging. It has also brought inspirational and educational content to empower female entrepreneurs. In this first edition, outstanding speakers have shared pinpoint female founders' struggles and discussed the measures needed. Fundamental topics, such as funding, networking, building ecosystems, education, mental resilience, diversity and inclusion have been addressed over the two days.

Impact and Mission of European Female Founders

Female-led companies represent only 5% of all VC backed startups, with this percentage going downnto 2% if the team is all-women. For this reason, Commissioner Gabriel is asking European women to raise their voices. In May 2022, European Female Founders was created on her initiative. This network brings together European women entrepreneurs to propose concrete actions to enable equal opportunities for all founders. The network aims to inspire, encourage and act to support female entrepreneurship for an inclusive and diverse Europe.

S3E's contribution to achieving gender equality

At S3E, we are committed to supporting women’s economic empowerment and entrepreneurship as part of our innovation programs. S3E focuses on the acceleration of deep tech projects, startups, and SMEs that, by providing solutions towards a more sustainable society and economy, can impact social development and economic growth in these countries and contribute to the timely achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), in line with the EU Green Deal, the EU Digital Agenda and the Recovery Plan for Europe. Because of this mission, we are at the frontline of making female researchers and innovators thrive.
